How funny does this movie look!

I haven’t had the chance to catch Central Intelligence yet but since the trailer dropped a couple months back i’ve been hanging out to watch it.

I mean what’s there not to love? Combining the best action and comedy stars in there respective genres into an interesting buddy comedy narrative full of explosions, combat and laughs – it looks like a great way to spend a date night.

When I sat down to do this quick piece there were alot of cool moments I could have pulled from the trailer, from the moment The Rocks character slides out into the basketball court completely nekkid to Kevin Harts failed attempt doing a back flip. But my favourite of all the moments was definitely this one, right before The Rock launches himself and Kevin Hart out the top of a high rise office building, escaping danger and living on to tell there ‘totally boss story’.

I initially went to do a complete painting of this but ended up changing it to a ‘mild sauce’ style piece (if you’re unsure what that means check the options section in any of the caricature pages).

Anyways here it is! I’m looking forward to doing alot more movie moment type caricatures, and Tarzan comes out tomorrow so who knows.

From Sketch to Completion

Step 1 – The Sketch

centralintelligence01

The angle of Dwayne Johnsons face was really awkward for me to capture, I had about 3 attempts at doing it until I finally nailed it. The fourth time was alot faster to nail I guess because of all the failed attempts before it. Kevin Hart I nailed on the first go.

I also made a couple attempts at exaggerating their features to give it that real caricature look but it just didn’t look right so I ended up making only slight adjustments, more on the bodies than anything else.

Step 2 – Inking

centralintelligence02

Looking back at this now I think I would have liked to have spent a bit more time inking, adding in more heavy line variations and a few other ticks here and there to tighten it up. I think I lean too much on my colouring to sort out lighting and shading – something to think about for future pieces I guess.

Step 3 – Adding Flat Colour

I kept the flat colours more or less the same as the reference – doing anything different to the reference didn’t feel like it was gonna add anything significant to the piece.

Step 4 – Adding That Sauce

centralintelligence04

I decided to go with the mild sauce here because i felt the shapes on the face worked better for that style of render.

Step 5 – Finishing Up

After adding a bit more sauce and blending some of the shapes I did a bit of colour correcting and added the speech bubbles to finish it off.

I probably could have taken the piece further but i’m pretty happy to leave as is a t this stage.

Hope you like it!
